chapter 17
ââ
When I wake up in the morning, Leroy is gone. Trevor tells me that he left early. I take a long shower and mentally make my shopping list. Today Iâm going to buy some things to make my life here a little less miserable.
Trevor and I start at the Kmart, where I buy him a coat and pick up a coffee maker and some makeup for me. I usually buy my makeup from the counter at Macyâs, so itâs hard to choose a foundation and lipstick from the millions of choices at Kmart. I go for the cheapest.
Our next stop is my hair salon. I canât afford the perm Leannâs hair needs, but a decent haircut will do wonders. I ask Sharon, who has cut my hair for years, if she can cut it without the shampoo and blow dry. I donât tell her I canât afford it; I just say weâre in a hurry. She purses her lips, but since she doesnât have anyone else waiting, she agrees. I tip her the best I can and we head to the library. Trevor is carrying a stack of old magazines the receptionist let him have. Iâm sure there will be plenty of pictures of beautiful people in those.
It turns out Leann doesnât have a library card and Trevor has never been to the public library before. I fill out the form to get a library card. Luckily they donât want much information other than name and address and telephone. I make up a phone number.
Trevor picks out three books. I donât want to go home, but we are too loaded down to go anywhere else. Itâs a beautiful day. âTrevor, letâs take this stuff home and then go have a picnic. We can take the books to the park with us.â He loves the idea.
I can hear the music coming from our apartment before we are even halfway up the stairs. Loud blaring bass that makes the whole building shake. Mr. Giovanni is not sitting in his customary spot outside his apartment and his folding chair is gone. As we reach our landing, the music is even louder because the door is standing wide open. Itâs country music, which shouldnât surprise me. Iâm stunned by what I see inside the apartment. Leroy is dancing around with a cigar hanging from his mouth and a drink lifted high in the air. He sees us and starts to yell greetings. The cigar falls out of his mouth. He ignores it and comes running to greet us. He grabs the bags out of my hand, flings them on the couch (my coffee maker!), and puts his arms around me. Now he is dancing me around the apartment. Trevor is standing in the doorway with a grin on his face. Leroy stinks from the cigar, which is slowly burning a hole in the ugly yellow carpet, and of booze. He has another funny smell on him too. Almost like a barn. Heâs yelling,
